What is a lumper service?

The short answer

A lumper service is a third-party labor company whose crews load and unload freight at warehouse docks. Lumpers unload inbound trailers, restack loads that shifted in transit, break down and rebuild pallets, and verify the seal and the case count on every trailer — so drivers don't unload their own freight, and the receiving dock keeps moving.

What lumpers actually do

"Lumper" is the freight industry's word for the worker who unloads a truck by hand at the dock. The job is physical freight handling, and a professional crew does more than move boxes:

Who buys lumper services — and why

Warehouses and distribution centers are the main buyers. Inbound volume is uneven: a facility can receive a handful of trailers one day and a surge the next, and floor-loaded trailers take far more labor than palletized ones. A lumper service gives the receiver an unloading crew that scales with the dock instead of a fixed payroll that doesn't.

Carriers and drivers are the other side of it. A driver who unloads his own trailer burns his hours-of-service clock sitting at a dock, and at many facilities drivers are charged a per-load unloading fee. A professional crew turns the trailer faster, and the signed log and receipt protect the driver and carrier when the charge is submitted for reimbursement.

Shippers and receivers both benefit from the count. The most expensive argument in freight is "the count was short." A seal verified before breaking and a count taken at the door, signed by a lead, turns that argument into a document.

How a managed lumper operation runs it

Anyone can send bodies to a dock; a managed operation runs lumper work as a system. In LOGIX COMMAND — the logistics manager built by Capital 7 Logistics, which runs its own lumper crews on the same system — a lumper job moves like this:

Frequently asked questions

What is a lumper service?

A lumper service is a third-party labor company that loads and unloads freight at warehouse docks. Its crews unload inbound trailers, restack shifted loads, break down and rebuild pallets, sort freight, and verify seals and counts, so truck drivers do not have to unload their own trailers and the receiving dock keeps moving.

What does a lumper do?

A lumper unloads freight from a trailer by hand or with pallet jacks, breaks down pallets for inspection or reconfiguration, restacks and re-wraps freight that shifted in transit, sorts cases by purchase order or aisle, and helps record the seal number and case counts for the load. A lumper lead typically verifies the seal before it is broken and signs the per-trailer unload log.

Who pays for lumper services?

It depends on the facility. Many warehouses and distribution centers contract a lumper service directly and pay per trailer or per case. At other facilities the carrier or the driver pays a per-load unloading fee, which is why managed lumper operations issue receipts and signed unload logs — the paperwork is what makes the charge reimbursable and the count defensible.

Why do warehouses use lumper services instead of their own staff?

Inbound volume is uneven: peak days, floor-loaded trailers and no-show coverage needs spike faster than a fixed warehouse staff can flex. A lumper service supplies trained unloading labor on demand, keeps drivers from spending their hours-of-service unloading, and produces a verified count at the door, which reduces shortage disputes between shippers, carriers and receivers.
